Tabitha Chawinga has been flying high in the women’s Serie A. The Inter Milan striker finished top scorer with 23 goals in 21 matches. The Malawi captain now has her sights set on the African Women’s Player of the Year award.

This season, Tabitha Chawinga became the first African player to finish as top scorer in the women’s Serie A.

On loan from Chinese club Wuhan to Inter Milan, the Malawian has 23 goals in 21 matches, eight ahead of her runner-up Cristiana Gireli of Juventus. Quite a performance from the Malawian superstar.

“I’m simply honoured to have been given the gift of playing football and sharing it with the world. It’s humbling for a young girl like me who comes from one of the poorest countries in the world, Malawi,”

And I will certainly continue to carry the African flag and that of Malawi in my future exploits. It means I can aim higher. So I’m looking forward to taking on more challenges in football.”

Tabitha Chawinga also set another record. She is the only African player to win the golden boot in three different countries. The Malawian finished top scorer in the Swedish and Chinese championships (3 times).

Despite her achievements, Chawinga has never won the award for best African player. The Malawian star had been nominated four times. Her aim now is to win the award. 

“Every player should want to win this title (African Women’s Player of the Year). My eyes remain fixed on the prize. When the time comes, my hands remain in the air and I continue to play good football.”
