Real Madrid started the 2023/24 edition of La Liga with a resounding 2-0 victory over Athletic Club.

The game saw Jude Bellingham scoring his first competitive goal for the club and starring in a comfortable win for Los Blancos.

Everything went well for Real Madrid on the night apart from the injury to Eder Militao.

Serious knee problem for Militao

The Real Madrid centre-back had a decent game for the most part before he had to be subbed off during the start of the second half.

Militao was taken off due to a serious knee injury, as the player was screaming in pain. Carlo Ancelotti did not waste any time and brought in Antonio Rudiger.

According to MARCA, the first indications show Militao does indeed have a serious knee problem. Real Madrid are expected to further diagnose the issue by conducting more tests.

Only after further tests, the club can ascertain how long the defender will remain out on the sidelines.

But for the immediate future, it is a major blow for Real Madrid, who have already lost Thibaut Courtois and Arda Guler due to injuries before the start of the season.

While the club are reportedly close to capturing Kepa Arrizabalaga as the replacement for Courtois, finding a replacement for Militao could be a lot trickier.

With David Alaba already coming on the back of an injury-laden year, Militao’s potential absence could force the club to look for options from the youth team.

For the time being, though, the Spanish giants will patiently wait for further diagnostics and test results of Militao’s knee injury.

The worst-case scenario for Los Blancos could be an ACL tear for Militao, but there is a possibility the injury could be less serious than that.
