Pep Guardiola has claimed he will always be a failure at Manchester City because his ‘idol’ Julia Roberts didn’t come to see his side when visiting Manchester back in 2016.

The City boss took his side one step closer to a first Champions League title with Tuesday night’s 7-0 rout of RB Leipzig. Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan both found the net but it was Erling Haaland who grabbed the headlines, with a ridiculous five-goal haul to make him the club’s record one-season scorer on 39 after surpassing Tommy Johnson’s 94-year record.

Victory hands the Blues a place in the quarter-final draw on Friday morning, and Guardiola’s side remain favourites to lift the trophy in Istanbul come June – although that will seemingly not be enough to satiate Spaniard.

“Whatever happens in the Champions League this year, winning, even if we win this Champions League, three in a row I’ll be a failure,”

“I have three idols in my life: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Julia Roberts. These are my three idols.

“For obvious reasons, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods and Julia Roberts as well. Julia Roberts came to Manchester, not in the 80s and 90s when [United] were with Sir Alex Ferguson winning titles after titles. She came during the period we were better than United over the last four or five years.

“She went to visit Man United, she didn’t come to see us, so that’s why even if I win the Champions League, we will not be compared because of the fact that Julia Roberts came to Manchester and didn’t come to see us – my idol.”

Guardiola said.
