Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has undergone surgery to correct a long-term hip injury, reports the Daily Mail.
The Spaniard will miss the rest of the season as a result, which could hamper the Reds’ top-four chances.
Thiago was unavailable during Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The victory saw Jurgen Klopp’s side move up to fifth in the Premier League table, seven points off the Champions League places.
They face Fulham, Brentford, Leicester City, Aston Villa and Southampton in their last five games of the season.
The Merseyside club will be without Thiago for them, and Klopp will have to rely on other midfield options.
The 32-year-old has played 18 league games this term, and his unavailability has proven costly.
Liverpool are finishing the season without a major trophy and must make major squad changes this summer.
Thiago has made ten appearances across all other competitions, with his thigh injury proving problematic all campaign.
He injured his quad in the first Premier League game of the season and was ruled out of action for a month.
The former Bayern Munich star underwent minor surgery to correct the issue and prevent further damage.
However, the issue reoccurred and forced him to go under the knife again.
While Thiago will no longer play this term, he is expected to be back on his feet in July.
He has struggled with fitness since his move to the Anfield club in 2020, missing 42 league games so far.
Thiago is out of contract in 2024 and is unlikely to be handed a new deal given his age and injury concerns.
