While the women’s edition of La Liga was to start this weekend for its first professional version, the start of the championship could be postponed due to a strike by referees, disagreement on wages in particular.

A multiplication of wages by four claimed

As the Spanish media indicates, the central referee earned 300 euros per match last season, against 172 for the assistants and 80 for the fourth referee. With the professionalization of the championship, the unions would demand the multiplication of their salary by four, to reach 1,650 euros per match for the central referees and 825 euros for the assistants.

“The referees and assistant referees of the women’s first division wish to communicate their unanimous decision not to officiate any match of the national championship of the first division in the current conditions of uncertainty of their employment and their economic situation”, it is indicated in a press release from the CTA (Technical Arbitration Committee) published Thursday evening.

The League assures that the matches will be played and threatens to sanction the striking referees

The LPFF (women’s professional football league) counter-attacked this Friday evening by ensuring that the meetings will be held, pointing to the threat of sanctions. “In the event that the referees and participants do not show up for the scheduled meetings, the LPFF will proceed with the presentation of the corresponding disciplinary complaints, requesting that the sanction measures be adopted for such a serious infringement, including their disqualification”, is -he indicates.

“We will not accept any blackmail from any group or institution”, adds the LPFF, recalling that “all the teams participating in the first women’s division will appear at the matches scheduled for this Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September”. Earlier, the Spanish football league announced that a press conference would be held this Monday at 12:30 p.m., an opportunity for the CTA (Technical Arbitration Committee) to explain the interruption of its activities. It remains to be seen whether the championship will have started by then, while the first matches are scheduled for this Saturday at 12 p.m.
