Timo Werner’s Chelsea adventure has drawn to a close today, two years, three trophies, and 23 goals after arriving in London.

The 26-year-old has returned to RB Leipzig on a cut-rate deal, having failed to reproduce the form that made him such a sensational striker in the Bundesliga before: his worst season for Leipzig saw him score 13 league goals; he scored just 10 times in the Premier League for Chelsea in two years.

The German international spent two years at Stamford Bridge, having joined from the Bundesliga club in the summer of 2020 for a £49.5 million fee and has helped the club to the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup trophies. However, the 26-year-old, despite enjoying a healthy relationship with fans, has been unable to replicate the goalscoring prowess he did in Germany.

Chelsea paid Werner’s €60m buyout in 2020, taking advantage of our strong financial position in a weak market. Chelsea is getting just €20m back, with another €10m or so in potential add-ons in the future. That’s certainly not a fantastic deal for the blues, but perhaps speaks to the current leadership’s emphasis, where possible, on not dragging things out with loans in search of a few extra dollars, as they might have seen in such situation in years past.

Werner recorded 23 goals and 21 assists during his time with Chelsea while making 89 appearances. His time at the club has seen Werner utilised in a number of roles, but more frequently, the striker has found himself among Thomas Tuchel’s substitutes. The duo’s relationship is said to have become strained, while Werner, of course, has ambitions to be in his nation’s World Cup squad for the coming winter.

“Dear Blues, Today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC.

“I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club. At this point, I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches & staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club.”

In a statement, Werner said
