Laporta is pleased to have beaten PSG and Chelsea in the Lewandowski deal

Interviewed Monday evening by the TUDN channel, Joan Laporta said he was delighted with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski at FC Barcelona from Bayern Munich. In this case, which was completed for an amount of 45 million euros, the president of the Blaugrana club had to fight with stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

After completing the arrivals in one day of Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessié in early July , FC Barcelona formalized the signings of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski in less than a week . The arrival of the Pole from Bayern Munich, against 45 million euros, largely satisfied the Barcelona supporters and the president of the Blaugrana club, Joan Laporta.

The Catalan leader was a guest on the TUDN channel on Monday evening and answered questions from former Barca player Hristo Stoichkov. He thus returned to the complexity of the Lewandowski file , between the difficulty of negotiations with Bayern Munich and the tough competition to afford the services of the Polish striker.

“We were in competition with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, and the player chose to come to Barcelona”, welcomed Laporta, who specified that this transfer comes “in the finances of the club”, while Barça already shelled out €58m to buy Raphinha last week.

After Lewandowski, priority to defense

Beating PSG and Chelsea in the race to sign Lewandowski says a lot about the striker’s desire to join Barca. “That’s what I like. As Johan (Cruyff, editor’s note) said, I want players who want to come to Barça, explained Joan Laporta. And we have to thank him (Lewandowski, editor’s note) for that.”

With the arrivals of Raphinha and Lewandowski, the extension of Ousmane Dembélé and the presence in the workforce of Ansu Fati, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres or Memphis Depay, “we have an attack that can offer spectacle and score a lot of goals”, assured Laporta.

The priority of the Catalan club is now to focus on its defense. “Xavi steered us towards a series of players,” Laporta said. In this sector of play, after having recruited Christensen, Barça will have to look into the arrival of side, on the right as on the left. Laporta hopes to have more reason to celebrate by the end of the transfer window.
