After several weeks of intense negotiations between Sevilla FC and Barça, French international Jules Koundé has just initialed his contract with the Catalan club on Wednesday. Xavi finally has his priority reinforcement in central defense.
Jules Koundé will stay in La Liga. The French international (11 selections), in the sights of several European teams including Chelsea – who seemed ready to offer him a golden bridge to attract him into his nets – however had only one option in mind: that of Barca. And the 23-year-old’s desire to play for the Blaugranas will take shape. This Thursday, he signed up with the Catalan club. The operation is estimated around 50 million euros + 10 bonus. Bordeaux, his training club, will receive 20% of the amount on resale after having sold it for 25 million to Sevilla FC in 2019, or 5 million for the Girondins.
Priority of Xavi, Koundé only saw himself at Barça
Arrived in Seville in the summer of 2019 from Bordeaux, Koundé took the step of the high level with the Andalusian club. For his first season in La Liga, the Parisian by birth lifted the Europa League by beating Inter Milan in the final in Cologne (3-2). The defender trained at the Girondins also discovers the Champions League, while managing to impose himself in the system of Julen Lopetegui. At the same time, in the summer of 2021, he was selected by Didier Deschamps to compete in the Euro with the Blues.
For several weeks, the mano-a-mano between the Blues and the Blaugrana to secure his services was fierce. In search of at least two centrals, Thomas Tuchel had set his sights on the Frenchman and was ready to put 65 million euros on the table. But the Londoners saw Barça position themselves on the file, thanks to a big forcing from Xavi, who had targeted Koundé as a priority target. A positioning that changed everything for Koundé, who wanted to join the Catalan club . From then on, he did everything to temporize, Barça having to mobilize the necessary funds and payroll before activating.
Finally, the denouement took place this Thursday. The former Bordeaux has been patient and will soon join Ousmane Dembélé and the other stars of Barça. From there to hope to see the tricolor player play the last friendly match of the American tour of the Catalan club, this Sunday against the New York Red Bulls.
