In an interview with the BBC, Erik ten Hag recalled on Monday that he was counting on Cristiano Ronaldo for the coming season. The Dutch coach of Manchester United even says he is impatient to work with the Portuguese striker, announced on departure.

This is one of the hot topics of the summer at Manchester United . And Erik ten Hag tries to cool it down a bit. In an interview with the BBC , the Red Devils coach gave an update on Cristiano Ronaldo ‘s situation on Monday . A year after his big return to Old Trafford, the Portuguese striker (under contract until 2023) is announced to be leaving, at the dawn of a season where MU will not compete in the Champions League. A perspective swept away by his new coach.

“Ronaldo is not for sale. I’m counting on him and looking forward to working with him. For the rest, I don’t know what else to say because the situation is still the same as last week,”

Says Ten Hag, who responded to several media earlier this week.

In an interview published by The Athletic , the former Ajax Amsterdam coach drives the point home by saying that CR7 can fit perfectly into his game plan.

“Ronaldo is a top player in our team”

“We want to play a certain way, a top player can help us and Ronaldo is obviously a top player in our team. Cristiano is able to do it. During his career, he has proven everything, believes Ten Hag. We know all that Ronaldo is a great professional. He’s training and he’ll be fit, that’s the least of my concerns.”

At 37, Ronaldo is coming off a prolific season with United (24 goals in 39 games in all competitions). But his team does not seem able to meet his high ambitions. Since the start of the transfer window, his name has been associated with many formations, from PSG to Bayern Munich, via Naples, Barça, Chelsea and even a club from Saudi Arabia. No action so far. The five-time Ballon d’Or did not participate in the Red Devils’ recent tour of Asia, officially for “family reasons”.
