Ghana claimed a 1-0 win over Angola in the 2023 Afcon qualification – Group E match – at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Thursday evening.
The narrow victory saw the Black Stars open a three-point lead at the top of the group standings, while Palancas Negras are placed third on the table with three matches left.
The two teams are set to meet again at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda where Angola will be banking on their home ground advantage.
Ghana were the better side in the first half with Inaki Williams forcing goalkeeper Neblu into a fine save in the 18th minute and Mohammed Kudus failed to score from the rebound.
Neblu was determined not to concede on the day as the Primeiro de Agosto star pulled off a fine save to deny Kudus in the 27th minute and the score was 0-0 at halftime.
Palancas Negras continued to push for the opening goal after the restart with Kamaldeen Sulemana embarking on a solo run before forcing Neblu into making a smart save in the 53rd minute.
The Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton introduced Antoine Semenyo in the 69th minute and the AFC Bournemouth attacker went on to score in stoppage time to earn Ghana a 1-0 win.
