England won the opening match of Women’s Euro 2022 on Wednesday night in Manchester with a 1-0 victory over Austria

Everything is rolling for the Lionesses. In front of nearly 70,000 spectators – a record for the competition – at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s lair, England launched the Women’s Euro 2022 football match perfectly. Sarina Wiegman ‘s selection won 1-0 against Austria on Wednesday night, thanks to a first-half goal from Bethany Mead (16th).

Semi-finalist of the last Worlds and the previous European championship, England quietly dominated this meeting with little rhythm. Made possible by a splendid pass from Francesca Kirby, the opener was however narrowly validated, with the help of goal-line technology. Because at real speed, it was impossible to know if Carina Wenninger had managed to succeed in a rescue on her line or not. But Bethany Mead had scored her 15th goal of her last 15 international caps.

Austria was not there

In the end, the English ended the match with 15 shots against 6. It was not until the 78th minute to witness the first (and only) real hope of equalizing the Austrians of Irene Fuhrmann, with a shot from Barbara Dunst. But Mary Earps, more than ever at home, as Manchester United goalkeeper the rest of the year, was beyond reproach.

England temporarily take the lead in Group A, pending the meeting scheduled for Thursday evening (9 p.m.) between Norway and Northern Ireland. For the next game of the English, it will be July 11 against the Norwegians.
