Dutch players’ union denounces Barça’s behavior with De Jong

FC Barcelona finds itself in the sights of a Dutch players’ union which accuses it of mistreating its player Frenkie de Jong by pushing him insistently towards the exit.

The boss of the Dutch players’ union is stepping up to defend Frenkie de Jong (25). Evgeniy Levchenko, president of the VVCS, denounced the treatment inflicted by FC Barcelona on the midfielder by pushing him out, against his will. A priority for Manchester United, the former Ajax player wants to stay in Catalonia where he is under contract until 2026 and does not intend to join the north of England. The Catalan club, in search of cash, is pushing for a departure that would allow it to recover part of the sum invested in the midfielder in 2019 (85 million euros).

“It’s a kind of extortion”

“I think a union should protect all players, Levchenko told the ANP agency. Now a player is cornered by a club and chased away. It’s up to an international union (FIFPro, editor’s note) to act If Barcelona keep paying his wages, there’s nothing wrong contractually either. Barcelona will then invoke sporting reasons, but it’s disastrous for a young player’s career. It makes him kind of a extortion.”

Barça would also like to part with their player to reduce his imposing salary. But for Levchenko, the midfielder should not accept to lower his emoluments to stay at Barça, as Xavi would have recently asked him.

“I would say no, he adds. Barcelona have full responsibility. The club’s long-term policy is dramatic. It’s crazy when the players have to pay for the financial mess. He feels at home there and understands the culture, so I also understand that he doesn’t want to leave.”

While waiting for a solution, the player played the friendly matches of Barça this summer and participates in the tour in the United States. Joan Laporta, Catalan president, recently proclaimed his attachment to the midfielder while wishing to discuss his situation with him.

“Frenkie de Jong is our player, we really like him, he assured. We have received offers for Frenkie, but we have not accepted at the moment, because we want to speak with him and find out exactly. what he wants. We must clarify certain aspects of his situation.
