Deniz Aytekin has decided to put an end to his career as an international referee in order to be able to spend more time with his loved ones. The 44-year-old German, known for leading Barça’s comeback against PSG five years ago in the Champions League (6-1), will continue to officiate in the Bundesliga.

Parisian supporters can be reassured, they will no longer cross paths with Deniz Aytekin . The referee of Barça’s famous comeback against PSG (6-1) has decided to end his international career. Five and a half years after the unforgettable evening at Camp Nou, in the knockout stages of the Champions League (March 8, 2017). A mythical meeting during which supporters of the capital club accuse Aytekin of having favored the Catalans.

The German official, of Turkish origin, justified his withdrawal on the site of his federation , which obviously did not expect it.

“The main reason is that I want to spend more time with my family and friends, explains the 44-year-old referee. International trips take too long and are physically demanding. The level of my German colleagues has also weighed in my decision. We have young referees who can take the next step on the international stage and we also have very good experienced referees who deserve to officiate international matches.”

“I still have a few years at the highest level”

Elected best referee this year by the German federation (for the second time in his career), Deniz Aytekin had been leading international matches for twelve years. He notably officiated in 21 Champions League and 22 Europa League matches. On the other hand, he never refereed during a Euro or a World Cup.

The native of Nuremberg, who has 199 Bundesliga games, will now be content with local competitions. Without crossing borders.

“If I stay healthy, I still have a few more years at the highest level in Germany. It’s a great motivation. I want to focus on the Bundesliga and national competitions, making sure May my next few years be as successful as possible”.

Deniz Aytekin believes.
