Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has rejected a contract renewal offer from the club, according to The Athletic.

The club is trying to get the 32-year-old to sign a new deal on a reduced salary, but he has knocked back their proposal.

However, both parties expect the negotiations to end positively despite reaching a roadblock.

There is a difference between the numbers on each side and negotiations are ongoing to narrow them.

De Gea is one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League, earning £375,000 per week based on the deal he signed in 2019.

The Spaniard signed that contract in the final year of his previous contract. He was the established number one, with no one competing for his spot.

Alexis Sanchez had just arrived from Arsenal, signing a £400,000 per week deal, giving De Gea the upper hand in negotiations with the club.

The situation is different now with the keeper entering the latter stage of his career and Dean Henderson a viable contender for his starting spot.

De Gea is the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world but recognises that he needs to take a pay cut to extend his 12-year stay at the club.

However, he feels he is still crucial to the club and wants any new deal to reflect his status.

Despite initially doubting De Gea’s suitability for his system, United manager Erik ten Hag has come to appreciate the Spaniard.

United can trigger an extension clause in De Gea’s contract, but they are focusing on a new deal rather than activating the clause.

The former Atletico Madrid player became the youngest goalkeeper in Premier League history to rack up 400 appearances this season.

He also broke Peter Schmeichel’s clean sheet record for the club.
