Carter Payne, 20-year-old defender playing at Barça Residency Academy, died on Saturday evening in a road accident. He also played in the reserve team of Tormenta FC.

FC Barcelona mourns one of its hopes. A member of Barça’s American Academy, defender, Carter Payne, died this Saturday evening in a road accident at the age of 20, as the Barça Residency Academy announced on Twitter:

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of one of our own, Barca student Carter Payne. Carter was an amazing brother, teammate and athlete who will be greatly missed. We send our love and support to Carter’s family and friends during this extremely difficult period”.

Hit by a runaway vehicle

Local news outlet WTOC learns that the player was hit by a getaway vehicle while riding an electric scooter in Statesboro, Georgia around 1am. After being airlifted to hospital, he did not survive. A member of the blaugrana academy which opened in 2017, Payne played in the reserve team of Tormenta FC in USL League Two, the fourth American division.

This Sunday, his club announced the creation of the Carter Payne Fund in his memory. The funds raised will be donated to his family and will be used to finance a scholarship for an academy player each year from next season.
